Wildwood Newsletter Week 18: 1/27/19

“All I am saying…can be summed up in two words: Trust Children. Nothing could be more simple, or more difficult. Difficult because to trust children we must first learn to trust ourselves, and most of us were taught as children that we could not be trusted.” ~ John Holt

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • We have found dates for both community meetings for this semester! Sunday February 17 (4-6pm) and Sunday April 7 (3-5pm). Please save these times in your calendars! Both will be at our Regeneration Wildwood space unless a change needs to be made (in which case we’ll contact everyone with the new location).
  • We are SO excited to announce that our wonderful friends Sierra Allen and Pia Janzen are coming to visit Boone during the week of February 14-20! Sierra was our beloved facilitator during much of our first year of Wildwood, and has remained a close friend of the community and support to us. She divides her time between the Yukon, Costa Rica, and upstate NY, in addition to many travels supporting self-directed education communities, leading trainings/workshops on SDE and ALC, and working with Pia on a project called EDIT – Education in Transformation, whose mission is to create films that share stories from the Self-Directed Education Movement (Wildwood members are featured in several of their films so far). Pia visited Wildwood in 2016 and now lives in Barcelona, but has also stayed in touch as a close friend of our community. Sierra will be at Wildwood on Feb 14, 18, and 19, and Pia will be at Wildwood on Feb 18-19. We may also plan a gathering or outing with them on a non-Wildwood day that week…will keep you posted!
  • The fundraising/marketing committee will be meeting this week…please let us know if you can help with any of the following areas (these are the most essential volunteer needs at Wildwood), and if you would like to attend the planning meeting!
    1) Marketing/Outreach
(ex. doing a booth at Buildfest, joining SciDay, arranging a homeschoolers social/potluck, ideas for spreading the word about WW, public Facebook page)
    2) Planning a fundraising event (possibly coffee tasting)
    3) Grant-writing (Here is a list of grant possibilities — if you know of any other possibilities, please add to this list!)
    4) Communicate with donor base (send thank yous, maintain database of contact info, send regular Wildwood updates, etc.)
    5) Summer Camp planning (1st week of August)
  • Please remember to send warm winter gear with your kiddos (gloves and hats are especially needed!) so they can bundle up to play outside if they want to on these cold days!

Check out the photos below to see some of what we’ve been up to this past week … It was a challenge to fit in everything the kids wanted to schedule in our 2-day week! Both writing workshops happened, plus the planning and filming of a mini-movie, Dungeons and Dragons, zoology, photography with Dawn, an Outschool class, drawing, exploring new games, and much more… The space seemed especially full of creativity, openness to new experiences, and kids taking initiative to make things happen this week. I saw really effective leadership skills in both experienced and newer Wildwood members as they shared interests and facilitated activities in supportive ways with kids of all ages.  With Bodhi and Inara starting back with us this week (yay!), all our new members are here and are really settling in and becoming part of our community. The only person we’re missing now is London…can’t wait for him and his family to come back in March!

I want to give a big shout-out to everyone on our fundraising/marketing committee who have been meeting the past couple months and working to jump-start initiatives to sustain Wildwood this year and beyond! I’m so grateful for these efforts, knowing how crucial they are to our community and yet impossible for facilitators to hold on our own. They have come up with some great ideas that will need support from the whole community to fully implement…please let us know if you can lend your input and support to this group in any of the areas listed above! Thank you!

Have a great week!

Rebekah
