Wildwood Newsletter Week 19: 2/3/19

“Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself.” ~ John Dewey

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Thanks so much to Dana for organizing the Chipotle share day, and to everyone who spread the word and came out to eat! We raised $150 for Wildwood!
  • The next fundraising/marketing meeting will be Friday, February 15 at 10:30am (online)…please let Rebekah know if you’d like to join the meeting and we can send you a link! • It’s looking like a warm weather week! We are planning to take a field trip to Rocky Knob Park on Thursday to soak it up and play in the sun! Please feel free to send scooters, skateboards, and other fun wheeled things on Thursday for the paved area…as well as bikes if your child would like to ride on the pump track! *Please let us know if you’re planning to send a bike to Rocky Knob, so we know how many we’ll need to transport.* (Also please send lunches that can be taken to the park, and water bottles)
  • If you are a mountain biker and would like to take a few experienced mountain biking kids onto the trails for a bit on Thursday during our field trip, please let us know!

Hi everyone!

I have just returned from a weekend in Atlanta to attend Heartwood ALC’s summit on Racial Equity in Self-Directed Education. It was an amazing day with powerful speakers and discussions…please let me know if you want to hear more about it, I’ll be happy to talk your ear off! 🙂

Check out the photos below to see some of what we’ve been up to this past week … We volunteered at the Hunger and Health Coalition again on Thursday, and plan to continue this relationship of volunteering there on a regular basis this semester. We are beginning to explore our Makey Makey board (a circuit board that kids can use to connect everyday objects to computer programs), starting with the celery stick piano. More to come!

We have invited all kids and facilitators to create a “challenge quest” for themselves this semester, and many are starting to form ideas of what they would like to do! These can range from personal challenges/goals (ex. creating a new healthy habit around exercise or food, or learning/improving a skill…such as learning enough Spanish to order a meal in Spanish), to science experiments/projects (which Alyssa is ready to help/support), to a “be the change” quest in which one or more kids takes on a goal serving the larger community (ex. a service project for a local program serving people in need, or advocating for a cause and working toward changes in our wider community). Feel free to help your child brainstorm about possibilities for this! The most important thing is that what they choose is a real interest of theirs that is compelling and meaningful to them.

Also, parents and families…you can participate along with us by choosing your own personal challenge (or science project, or “be the change” quest) if you’d like to! I am having a really hard time narrowing down mine…might be either meditating 10 minutes every morning for 2 months (and holding space for others at Wildwood to do this if they’d like), or learning a brand new piano piece to play for everyone in May (after not playing at all for 20 years)! It can truly be anything that inspires you!

Hope you all enjoy our bit of spring weather this week before it changes back to winter!!

Rebekah
